What makes turtles so different from other reptiles - the shell ! Turtles are the only vertebrate with shell developed to such degree.
The primary function of it is of course to give protection. Having such armour comes with all sorts of adjustments and modifications.
Turtles evolved into reptiles with very unique anatomy to accomodate this luxury of having their home with them wherever they go.
