The snapping turtles, like any other turtles and reptiles, require a photoperiod. They should be exposed to 8 - 12 hours of light, depending
on the season - longer in summer and shorter in winter.
A fluorescent light, suspended above the tank, is absolutely sufficient. It can be connected to a timer which will take care of the switching off
and on, and save you the work. It is also ok to have a regular lightbulb instead - besides being a source of light it will also create a hot spot in the
tank.
Tha basking light is not necessary - these turtles will not leave the water to bask.
The lights used for alligator snapping turtles don't have to be full spectrum. Since gator snappers don't leave water, all the UV rays
will get blocked by water.
