The alligator snapping turtles reach sexual maturity at the age between 11 - 13, and weight of about 30 pounds.
They lay from 9 to 52 eggs in a single clutch, which are spherical like a ping-pong ball and 1.25 to 2 inches in diameter. They lay their
eggs at night. They seem to like to do it in privacy, at night, and might stop the process when approached.
They mate in water in the spring, and nest about 2 months later. They dig their nest in sand, and the incubation takes
about 100 - 140 days - much longer than the common snappers.
The sex of the baby turtles is determined by the temperature of incubation, with higher or lower temperatures producing more females,
and moderate temperatures more males.
