According to Dr. Pritchards book
'Encyclopedia of turtles', there are 8 fossil species of Chelydra family recognized today,
and in their form all of them reseamble Macroclemys temmincki.
The book gives the following list of species:
- M. schmidti - from Miocene in North America;
- M. auftenbergi - from Pliocene from Florida;
- Acherontemys heckmanni - from Miocene from Washington
- Hoplochelys - From North America;
- Chelydrops;
- Chelydropsis;
- Gafsachelys - from Eocene from Europe and North Africa (this is the earliest known form);
