Chelydra.Org is dedicated to providing information about captive and wild snapping turtles. The information on the pages of this website is published with the belief that raising awareness among the readers will contribute to the improvement of living conditions of snapping turtles kept as pets. We also believe that educating people about their habits and biology will create more understanding and tolerance towards these magnificent animals. Hopefully it will lead us one step further towards appreciation of these creatures and all living creatures sharing this planet with us.
The domain name for the Snapping Turtle Website has been derived from 'chelydra', a Latin term for snapping turtle. The website was created first in 1998, and in 2001 it officially became Chelydra.Org. It's popularity has grown immensely, making it the most popular snapping turtle website on the World Wide Web. (150.000 page views in May 2004! - see the webstats) The turtle club, Snappers & Others, which is part of Chelydra.Org, has grown to an astonishing 400+ members.
Despite the already vast information on its pages the website is continuing to expand to meet its ultimate goals. As it expands, Chelydra.Org will become an A to Z resource and reference site about snapping turtles. With databases and online educational courses it will become the ultimate in-depth source of information for average readers and scientists alike.
Chelydra.Org has been created, and is still maintained single-handedly, by Stan Gielewski. If you like my work, please help me in making this project a success.
