Comments: I found a very small snapping turtle in my driveway. It looked very dry and ill. I placed it in a fish bowl with water and some rocks. I don't know what to feed it or if it will eat. It pretty much stays on the bottom. Is it ok for the turtle to stay unde water? I dont' live very close to water and was wondering if you might know how the animal got so far. There is a lake about 1/2 mile down the road. My kids are kind of attached to it already but I don't know if we will be able to take care of it properl . I also would like to know how big it will get, how long does it take for it to get big and when do they start to bite at things? It is about 2 to 2 1/2 inches around it has a long tail in relation to its body. I guess what I want to know is how difficul will it be for me to take care of it if I decide to keep it for a time? Comments: Your page on hatchlings was a blessing. I am a 4-H Club Program Assistant and present educational programs in Dorchester County Elem and Middle Schools. At our recent 4-H fair, some children found 5 hatchlings actually digging out of their nest. I purs aded 3 of the kids to give over the babies so I could place them elsewhere in a pond or lake (my boss did not want anymore snappers in the pond and told the kids to take them home - I don't agree with telling children it's alright to remove wild babies fr m a natural environment). This all just happened on 9/15/00. I placed the three in a tank at home with damp soil and a ZooMed light until I could get them situated elsewhere. When I looked at them the next morning they seemed to be catatonic and I fear d they were dead. I sensed the slightest movement so I placed them in water and it slowly revived them and they started to swim. Was that a mistake? I thought they were drying up and dying. I've have a decent knowledge of reptiles (snakes and turtles) but have never experienced caring for hatchlings. If there is any move information you could give me to help these three survive I would greatly appreciate it. Why did they just hatch now, in September? Isn't it a little late in the season? Box turtle hatch in June and July, don't they? Should I release them now or keep them til Spring? Thank you for your time and consideration. I'm sorry for the imposition but I really could use some expert advice.

Comments: Thanks! I swim a great deal, both by day and by night, and encountered a huge (18" shell, even discounting the bug-eyes fear factor) turtle. I approached to 10 feet, but not knowing the habits was reluctant to approach closer. I later found that this must have been a snapper, since that's the only local turtle that grows so large. I am relieved that they are not very aggressive in the water, but I now swim with a suit even at night. Do you know if they often attack swimmers? Thanks again!

Comments: We saved our snapper from certain death crossing a busy highway. Its only a baby 2" diameter.we have it in a 15 gallon tank, but noticed the last day or two a fuzzy coating forming on it. we only have been cleaning the water about twice a week. And feedin it exclusivly store bought turtle food. I'll change the water daily and see if that helps. Should I give it a sulfa bath? Help Doug

Comments: We found a turtle in our front yard, closest water is a few blocks away. We live in the city. No idea where it came from, maybe someone lost or dropped it off there, not sure. We found a beautiful slow moving stream a few blocks away in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood. We set it free there. It was the size of a dinner plate. It looked unlike anything we ever seen, with it's alligator looking tail. We looked your site up and found it looks just like the "snapper". Hope we did the right thing and it survives. Reading your information on the snapper tells us we probably did the right thing and we feel much more relieved. Thank you for your information.

Comments: I rescued Snappy from a local highway almost a year ago. He was a hatchling and apparently just went in a bad direction. He was very dehydrated and looked almost dead, so I found a beer can, filled it with water and popped him in.When we got home we fix d him up up with his own aquarium. He is now about nine inches long and doing great! He's very popular with everyone-loads of personality! Thanks for your page!

Comments: My turtles name is Gamera. I got him at a pet store last summer, cause the one I had before him died.Gameras really cool hes about 3inchs in diameter and lives in a 30 gal fish tank. My dad helps me take care of him, he eats reptomin food and other turtle ood from the pet shop. He also eats guppies and crayfish or any other fish he can catch in the tank. My dad says He might bite me one day and to be careful but Gamera doesn't even his at me. I read where you wrote not to carry him by the tail, but my dad ays thats why God gave snappers a long tail. He said he thought it would die in the sun. He thinks it came through his culvert. I don't know much about turtles.
