Boa Constrictor - Boa constrictor

  Boa constrictor

Common boa constrictors are in Central and South America, from eastern Ecuador, northern & eastern Peru, northern Bolivia, Brazil, central and eastern Columbia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Trinidad and Tobago. They are very docile and gentle snakes. They feed well and with their beautiful markings they are an ideal large pet snake.

They reach 6 - 12 feet and can weigh over 70 pounds (females are larger than males and can reach even 15 feet). They live 20 - 25 years and are very docile snakes. Boas are heavy bodied, very mascular and powerful constrictors, but can move quite fast. They reach maturity at 3.5 - 5 years and bear 8-60 live young in a litter after 4 - 8 months gestation (the larger and older the female the larger litter) .

Common boa constrictors are found from semi-desert regions to rain forests with high humidity. In the wild they feed on rodents, lizards, birds, small mammals and eventually larger prey.

     In Captivity

The boa constrictors can be kept in a 20 - 30 gallon tank for the first 1 - 2 years, but as they mature they will require a much larger enclosure, most likely custom built. As they like to climb, an addition of few shelves or branches is essencial. The humidity should be kept high, at 50 - 60 % minimum, and reised by misting the enclosure every few days. The temperature gradient is essencial in keeping these snakes happy, and sould be kept at 80 - 95 F. As boa constrictors like to soak in water, there should be a large water container supplied at all times. The container should be checked everyday for cleanliness - your boa will defecate in it once in a while. As with most snakes, the setup should include 2 hide boxes. Common boa constrictor will first feed on mice, but gradually require larger food like adult rats, and eventually for larger animals rabbits.
