I have a baby snapper that i found at a near by creek, the reason i took FLICK (turtle) home is because i didn't want anything bad to happen to it, being eaten by another bigger snapper which saw in the same small creek. Comments: i have cared for a few different types of turtles over the years. and the one thing that remains the same is that the snappers are the ones that i was able to feed from my hand without great fear. up till they got to about 8 to 10 inches in shell length i did enjoy the others, sliders, painters, map, box(2 types), softshells (3 types), spotted, but my heart belongs to the snappers.

Comments: I've had a real love for turtles as far back as I can remember and have had literally dozens upon dozens of all types of turtles. I usually would catch them very young and raise them till they were old enough to fend for themselves then I let them go. Mos people say that it is bad to let captive raised turtles back into the wild but it has been my experience that the turtles that I have raised are far superior, due to proper care and feeding, than older turtles caught in the wild. I've learned how to care properly for turtles through years of research due to personal interest. I currently have a 3 year old male red eared slider that I've had sense hatching. Due to proper care he is the most active turtle I've ever seen and their is almost nothing he can't atch and kill including fish and crayfish almost his own size. I also have 7 year old(estimated) female common snapper that I recently caught, along a major highway, that was lost due to some very major flooding in the area. It's a good thing that I got t her when I did or she would most certainly have been hit by a car. I think you have an excellent site. It is the best I have found on snapping turtles. I'm glad to see that there are others that care about turtles as much as I do.

Comments: I was very impressed with your web page. We have a three year old snapper named "Fang". The name doesn't fit her because she has a very mild temperment. We have her in a 50 gallon breeder aquarium in our family room. She enjoys watching TV and people. I was surprised as to how smart these turtles are. Fang actually can tell people apart and knows what containers mean food and which don't. I never thought I would ever become attached to a snapping turtle!!

Comments: What about habitat loss, effects of pesticides, etc. How about viable breeding populations? How large does the gene pool need to be to maintain a viable population? Are the older, larger males dominant breaders or do they lose interest as in some long-l ved species. I question the age-range provided. I remember a very large alligator snapper at the Dallas Natitoriun (sp) that was massive when I was a child and my oldest son saw him when he was 3 years old, a time span of some 20 years. It had at leas 6" moss/algae in it's back. He died when I was in graduate school, perhaps 1970 or so. You need to check it out, since they will likely have records. I seem to remember someone saying it was acquired for the Texas Centinential in 1934-35 and was alrea y very large with moss/algae on it's back.

Comments: back in 1980, I was married and living in the small town of carver, ma., staying for a brief time in a house on by my then father-in-law. He had me help him...we would catch snappers in the wild by leaving a line in certain swamps with a hook and half of a catfish for bait on the end. A day or so later we would drive to all the swamp sites and usually find large snapping turtles on the lines. We would take them back to the house, cut off the head and feet and hang them overnight on a line. The next day he would cut all the meat out of the shells...which would then be cooked and eaten..quite tasty.
